DLA Piper Kicks Off 2025 “Know Your Rights” Legal Education Training for Refugees in Luxembourg

Highlights:

  • DLA Piper's global “Know Your Rights” programme empowers asylum seekers and refugees in collaboration with NGOs worldwide
  • Since 2017, the initiative has conducted 515 training sessions across 17 countries, benefiting over 3,200 displaced individuals of 115 nationalities, involving more than 800 lawyers dedicating over 10,000 pro bono hours
  • In Luxembourg, launched in 2018, the programme has reached over 150 participants through 36 sessions
  • Key Luxembourg partners include UNHCR, Passerell, RYSE Luxembourg, and, for the first time, the Luxembourg-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce, alongside DLA Piper's local clients.

Luxembourg, 4 April 2025 - Global law firm DLA Piper, in partnership with UNHCR, Passerell, and RYSE Luxembourg, launched the 2025 edition of its Know Your Rights programme on 3 April 2025. The initiative is aimed at refugees and asylum seekers living in Luxembourg.

The nine-week programme, running from 3 April 2025 and ends on 12 June, empowers participants by providing essential knowledge and practical insights into navigating their rights within Luxembourg. Training sessions will cover critical topics including Luxembourg’s legal system, employment, housing, healthcare and entrepreneurship.

While DLA Piper lawyers lead many sessions, the programme also leverages diverse expertise: the firm’s HR team advises participants on creating effective CVs and succeeding in job interviews, partner associations provide specialist guidance on, among others, immigration law, and select DLA Piper clients contribute their experience on each topic. To maximize accessibility, sessions are delivered in English, with translations provided in Arabic, Farsi, Tigrinia and other languages as required.

Xavier Guzman, Country Managing Partner at DLA Piper Luxembourg stated: “Knowledge is power, and at DLA Piper in Luxembourg, we are committed to empowering our community. Our "Know Your Rights" programme stands as a pillar of our global pro bono efforts, deeply rooted in our core values of support and collaboration. This initiative provides participants with legal and practical insights, particularly in areas such as employment, healthcare rights, and entrepreneurship. We take immense pride in partnering with local associations and our clients to tackle the real-world challenges faced by refugees and asylum seekers in Luxembourg. We call upon other Luxembourg-based businesses to join us in this vital mission and make a transformative impact on the lives of those building new futures in our community.”

Yann Zellet, Counsel at DLA Piper in Luxembourg and coordinator of the programme, added: “We are excited to launch this year’s edition alongside our trusted long-term partners and warmly welcome the Luxembourg-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce. Unfortunately, the demand for such support continues to grow. Our programme fills an information gap, equipping individuals seeking protection with the necessary knowledge to successfully build their new lives in Luxembourg.”
